Canada Adventure 2015 Day 3

Our third day on the road started unlike any of the others thus far. For one thing, we knew that it would be a short day and one spent embracing the touristy activities. Secondly, I didn’t wake up until 9 AM when I was awoken by Chris. After getting over my surprise, we got ready and walked back down to Evelyn’s coffee shop for breakie and to see what else I could manage to get online before we disconnected ourselves again.

Around 11:30 AM, the rain had begun as we packed up the bikes, got gas, and headed North. The first stop was Johnston Canyon and its waterfall. We arrived so eager to go see the waterfall that we had all our gear on…25 or so pounds (for me)…and had to hike about 1/2 mile to the waterfall. If we were cold before, we weren’t after returning to the bikes!

By the time we had gotten to Johnston Canyon, the rain had eased up so that I could take some pictures are we rode on from there.

The next stop on the list was Lake Louise followed by Lake Moraine. Two gorgeously blue bodies of water feed by melting Glaciers! I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves.

After seeing Lake Louise, we stopped for lunch before going up to Lake Moraine, by far the better lake! The drive to these spots is always stunning. Upon arriving, we found the perfect place to park next to bike kin.

Our final destination and camping spot for the night was to be Takakkaw Falls. We left Lake Moraine and continued on West to Yoho National Park. The rain picked up again as we climbed in elevation. It was also getting really cold. Up until this point the temperature for the day stayed in the 50’s and the heated liners and grips performed admirably. Even with the rain, we remained warm, all except Chris’s hands since he neglected to buy cold weather gloves. This became more apparent for him as the temps dipped into the 40’s.

The falls that we finally arrived at were definitely awe-inspiring and faintly reminiscent of Yosemite. Unfortunately, the sun didn’t want to present itself, so the photos are a bit dull. I was able to get a picture of one of the glaciers way in the distance, though the quality isn’t that great.

After hiking all around the area, we discovered that the camping section was completely full and we ended up going back down to Lake Louise to another hostel for the night. It would have been nice to camp near the falls, but its also nice to not be rained on all night!

The adventure continues!
