Mountain Bound 2016 Day 2

We woke up Tuesday morning to a nice shower house and our respective camp breakfasts. After we packed up, gassed up, and iced our Camelbak’s, we set off for more mountain passes and grand views! Our first road took us upon a moose family encounter, which was completely unexpected this far south. I got good footage of it on my GoPro, but only this far off photo on my camera. We were told later on that they have been introducing moose to the Southern Rockies, and we seemed to happened upon an introduced family.

After our confrontation with wildlife, we took off towards Engineer Pass, one of the passes that we hadn’t done on either of our last two trips through the Rockies.

And the now obligatory “summit selfie”…

Onwards to the next pass…Black Bear Pass!

We took plenty of breaks though.

Before we reached the summit pass, there was a great section of an off-road truck climb that looked pretty challenging and we had unintentionally gone around. After taking pictures looking down it and walking around, I was challenged to give it a go! I think it looks fairly simple from the video, but riding over large shifting rocks and boulders before trying to hit and climb a 2 foot sheer ledge was harder than I thought it would be…perhaps it was the 400lb loaded dirt bike with a carb that was jetted for sea level running at 12,000ft!

Predictably, we made the summit and was followed by the “summit selfie”…

The descent from the summit was the most rugged run we have done to date. It was very steep in many places with many large boulder drops and off camber switchbacks. Needless to say, we didn’t stop to take pictures. But I did get a shot of the waterfall after we got past the rough stuff on our way down into Telluride.

After eating dinner at a great Mexican restaurant in Telluride, we found a nice campsite at Priest Lake campground south of town but we got in after dark so no pictures.
